He also mentioned plans to install barbed wire fence around seven Rohingya camps

If the army men, who have been accused of raping a Rohingya girl at Nayapara refugee camp in Cox's Bazar, are found to be guilty, they will not only be sacked, but will also be sent to civil jail, Bangladesh Army Chief of Staff Gen Aziz Ahmed said yesterday.

Speaking at an event in Bogra Cantonment, the army chief said: “Whatever the army does, it always maintains complete transparency. There is nothing to hide... Not only the army, but different other law enforcement agencies too were patrolling the area where the rape incident took place.”

He also said seven Rohingya camps would be fenced with barbed wire.

“Rohingyas are trying to leave the camps and go abroad. And they are getting caught while trying to leave the camps...In order to curb crime, maintain law and order, and strengthen surveillance inside the camps, as well as for national interest, we will fence the camps with barbed wire,” he added.

On September 29, the family of a 12-year-old Rohingya girl accused three members of an army patrolling team of raping her after barging into their shanty in Nayapara Rohingya refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar.

The girl was initially treated at the camp medical centre, but later shifted to Cox’s Bazar General Hospital, a Rohingya leader said, requesting anonymity.

On October 5, the Inter Service Public Relation Directorate issued a press statement saying the Bangladesh Army headquarters had taken the allegations seriously andformed a high-level probe committee to investigate the incident.

Gen Aziz attends reunion of 6th Armoured Corps

Gen Aziz Ahmed was in Bogra Cantonment to attend the reunion program of the Sixth Armoured Corps of Bangladesh Army, held at the Armoured Corps Centre and School yesterday, where he was the chief guest.

Addressing the event, Gen Aziz said the members of Bangladesh Army’s Armoured Corps are motivated by the motto “We will give up life before dignity.” He also said the members of Armoured Corps skilfully finished the UN peacekeeping missions.

He also talked about how the present government has contributed to the army's Armoured Corps and the armed forces as a whole.

About the Sixth Armoured Corps, he said: “Thanks to the present government, state-of-the-art battle tank MBT-2000 and recovery vehicles have been added to this corps. Two new regiments, 16th Cavalry and 26 Horse, have been established here as well.”

Among others, senior army officers and civil officials along with their family members were present at the reunion program.
