A Rohingya woman’s plot to illegally acquire a Bangladeshi passport was foiled after her fingerprint scans revealed her true identity.

The woman Asma, Rohingya ID – 14320171213154415 of the Teknaf Rohingya camp, introduced herself as Jannat Akhter, a permanent resident of the Dighinala union of the Shaturia upazila, at the Manikganj regional passport office on Wednesday.

“A man named Rezaul Karim came to our office to make a passport for a woman (Asma), whom he identified as his wife,” Passport Office Assistant Director (AD) Maksudur Rahman told Dhaka Tribune.

However, being suspicious of the woman’s behavior, AD Maksudur ran her fingerprints through the Rohingya Identification Database and found a match.

"It was found in the database that her actual identity was Asma, daughter of Sirajul Haque of the Teknaf Rohingya camp,” he added.

Later, she was detained at the passport office and handed over to the Manikganj Sadar police station.

“The woman went to Rezaul’s house in Savar from Chittagong two months ago. At the passport office, Asma was accompanied by Rezaul and his real wife and daughter,” Manikganj Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge Rakibuzzaman said.

Meanwhile, lawyer Md Anwar Hussain, who attested her documents and her passport form, has been detained for questioning.

“Legal action is already against the accused persons,” the OC added.
