The national unity government cannot be accepted and successful without Rohingya representation, says the chairman of ARSPH, an organization of the persecuted people based in Cox’s Bazar

A community-based organization of the Rohingyas in Cox’s Bazar has appealed for the inclusion of representatives of the persecuted Muslim people in the national unity government formed in Myanmar to counter the military regime.

The Arakan Rohingya Society for Peace and Human Rights (ARSPH) is lobbying with the international community in this regard.

Mohib Ullah, the chairman of ARSPH, told Dhaka Tribune from Cox’s Bazar on Monday night that without the Rohingya representation, the national unity government “cannot be accepted and successful.”

“We do hope that the Rohingyas will be included in the national unity government,” he said.

The national unity government in Myanmar was formed on Friday. The committee responsible for the formation of the government invited different communities to take part, but it has not invited the Rohingyas.
ARPSH wrote a letter to the Switzerland-based Special Advisory Council for Myanmar (SAC-M), an independent group of international experts working to support the people of Myanmar in their fight for human rights, peace, democracy, justice and accountability, to put pressure on the committee that formed the unity government to include Rohingya representatives in it.

The copies of the letter were also sent to the foreign minister of Bangladesh, United Nations secretary-general, United States Department of State, International Court of Justice and the spokesperson of the national unity government.

Mohib Ullah confirmed to Dhaka Tribune about the dispatch of the letter.

“We are Rohingya; Myanmar nationals, and genocide survivors. The Myanmar government, Myanmar armed forces and some Buddhist extremists forcibly pushed us out of Myanmar to Bangladesh in 1978, 1992, 2012, 2016 and 2017. Now we are living in the world’s largest refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, as Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals (FDMN),” says the letter, a copy of which has been obtained by Dhaka Tribune.

“We believe that now is the time to engage with the CRPH (Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw which formed the unity government) about the rights of the Rohingya in the future life of Myanmar,” it says.

“We Rohingya willingly welcome the CRPH. We participate in the CDM (civil disobedience) movement. CRPH and the newly formed National Unity Government (NUG) represent all of Myanmar. The formation of NUG is good news,” says the letter.

“However, as Rohingya, we cannot accept that the CRPH and NUG have been formed without including us. We have been persecuted and killed for many years in Myanmar because we are Muslim, not Buddhists. The tragic events of the past in Myanmar are destined to be repeated until impunity is ended and accountability ensured,” it says.

“This cannot happen unless we Rohingya are involved in the government of tomorrow. We must be involved in lawmaking, and we must be able to input into the new constitution,” it adds.
