War crime evidence found against 11 men, including USA citizen

All the accused were members of Pakistan Democratic Party during 1971 Liberation War

The investigation agency of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has prepared a report which contains evidence against eleven alleged war criminals of Shalla and Dirai police station at Sunamganj.

The agency’s Chief Coordinator Abdul Hannan Khan and Co-Coordinator Sanaul Hoque disclosed the information at a press conference held at their office in Dhaka's Dhanmondi on Monday.

Six of the arrestees are: Mohammed Zubayer Monir, 62, a US citizen, Md Zakir Hossain, 62, Md Siddikur Rahman, 61, Md Tota Mia Tailar, 81, Md Abdul Jalil, 71, and Md Abdul Rashid, 60. 

Among the above six, four are known as BNP supporters in their locality, one is a local BNP leader, and the other is a former BNP and present Awami League supporter.

However, all of the above were members of Pakistan Democratic Party (PDP) during the Liberation War of 1971.

The investigation team did not disclose the name of the other five as they are on the run and yet to be brought under custody. 

The investigation agency charged the 11 accused for crimes against humanity, which includes murder, mass killing, confinement, abduction, torture, and rape.

Investigation Officer Nur Hossain has been into these charges since March 21, 2016. 

The three-volume investigation report of 150 pages consists of evidence, records, and documents, which will be soon submitted to the ICT prosecution team.

According to Investigation agency, 39 people are now under investigation, charged with 24 cases of crime against humanity during the Liberation War. 

In total, they have received total 761 allegations of crimes against humanity, with 3867 people in accusation.

The tribunal has announced the verdicts of 38 cases, and has kept 33 cases in hold. 

The Appellate Division of Supreme Court has disposed 10 cases while 38 are waiting for hearing.

Till date, total six of the war criminals have received death sentences.
