BTRC for legal action against WiMAX operators

Update : 21 Sep 2016, 12:07 AM
Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has decided to file cases against WiMAX operators – Banglalion and QUBEE – under Public Demand Recovery Act soon. The decision came at a regular meeting of the commission recently. Until the end of June BTRC owed Banglalion Tk63 crore and QUBEE Tk17 crore. Meanwhile, third WiMAX operator Ollo will also face penalty as it failed to fulfil its roll-out obligation. In 2008, Banglalion and QUBEE got licence through an open auction to provide services. Both the operators had to pay Tk215 crore to avail the licence. Two years later, Ollo started to provide WiMAX services. According to BTRC latest statistics, the total number of WiMAX subscribers is 1,08,000. The operators said though retail level customers have declined, big corporate companies are receiving services. Considering the statistics, the importance of WiMAX services did not come down. At the time of awarding licence for internet providing services, all mobile operators opposed the move. They said the licence for 2600 band was awarded at a low price while they had to take frequency allocation for 3G auction at $20 million per megahertz.
