ILO meet to focus on job, social justice
The International Labour Organization is going to hold its Asia and the Pacific Regional Meeting at Bali in Indonesia tomorrow in a bid to focus on job creation, equality and social justice. Representatives including ministers from about 35 countries throughout Asia, the Pacific and the Arab states will join the event to discuss issues affecting employment and the world, said an ILO statement. The ILO and the United Nations specialised agency dealing with work-related issues will jointly host the 16th such regional meeting usually held every four year. Indonesian President Joko Widodo and the ILO’s Director General, Guy Ryder, are expected to inaugurate the meeting. About 400 people, including more than 20 Ministers, will attend the meeting. The meeting will start with a high-level panel discussion on “inclusive Growth for Social Justice” which will include Ryder, Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser al-Bakri, minister of Manpower, Oman, Ms Linda Kromjong, secretary general of International Organization of Employers, Felix Anthony, national secretary of Fiji Trades Union Congress and Vivek Puthucode, general manager for the public sector, Microsoft. In the plenary sessions, the panelists will focus on the challenges faced and policies required to create better jobs, developing the workforce skills needed for economic development and strengthening social dialogue so that it supports inclusive growth, the statement read. There will also be discussions on labour migration and migrant recruitment, the growth of multinational enterprises in the region and improving the gender balance. In the concluding session, the Asia Pacific regional meeting will help shape the national labour and employment policies of ILO member states as well as its work in the region. There will have technical brief on gender equality, global supply chains, labour migration, social protection, trade and regional integration, wages,  garment sector, youth employment and fragile states. A national delegation usually led by a minister will join the meeting in which representatives from the government, workers and employers organisations will be present. The meeting will address a broad range of issues and opinions affecting the region’s economy and labour markets. Policy makers, academics and civil society groups from across the region will also take part in the. A delegation from Bangladesh under the leadership of State Minister for Labour and Employment Md Mujibul Haque will join the meeting in which Labour and Employment senior Secretary Mikail Shipar, Salahuddin Kashem Khan, president, Bangladesh Employers’ Federation, and Wajedul Islam Khan, general secretary, Bangladesh Trade Union Centre, will be present.
