The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) said the cost of conducting business has been increasing, and huge amounts of working hours are being lost due to an increase in traffic jam.

Business leaders made the comments while attending a meeting of its standing committee relating to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives (City Corporation) organized at the FBCCI board room in the capital on Saturday, according to a press release.

Chairman of the standing committee Helal Uddin chaired the meeting, while Director In-Charge of the committee Abu Motaleb presented the committee’s future plans on the issue.

Among others, Vice-President of FBCCI Md Muntakim Ashraf and Director Hafez Harun-ur-Rashid also attended the meeting.

According to those attending, the government’s decision to set weight limits for trucks on highways has increased the number of vehicles on the road, since a greater number of transports are now needed to carry loads that could be done with a smaller number before.

“This is creating traffic congestion,” said the discussants. “Moreover, cost of doing businesses has also increased due to the decision, as a larger number of vehicles need to be deployed on roads now than before.”
