Vermicelli (locally know as Shemai) makers are passing a busy time producing in Barisal, ahead of Eid-Ul-Fitr.

The producers of this ethnic food are expecting to see abundance in sales before Eid.

But the last couple of days have hampered the production of vermicelli due to heavy

rainfall, and as a result, workers of this industry are having a hard time meeting production demands.

In Gaurnadi upazila, factories of “Abar Khabo” and “Baby Food Lacchi Shemai” are using state-of-the- art machinery for producing vermicelli.

Meeting the needs of local people, these factories are even supplying their product to neighbouring areas of the upazila.

Mokhtar Hossain Shikder started his Abar Khabo factory eight years ago, with a small scale production capacity. Gradually his product gained its name in the local market, which then spread to neighbouring upazila areas.

Mokhtar said: “One of the most important food items on the day of Eid is Shemai.”

Krishna Chandra Bonik of Torki Bandar, seeing the success of Abar Khabo, started his own brand Baby Food Lacchi Shemai, which gained popularity as well.

Krishna said: “Both of these factories have gained popularity in the upazila.”
