IndustriALL Bangladesh Council (IBC), a workers’ right body, has sought Tk16,000 as the minimum wage for garment workers.

IBC Secretary General Salauddin Swapan made the demand in a press conference held at the National Press Club on Saturday.

He alleged that even though the wage board formed on January 29 to review wages of apparel workers but there is no representative from workers’ organizations in the board, reports UNB.

Rather owner and government-backed representatives were included in the board, he added.

“Even though workers hoped that the board would announce a rational salary structure, but it’s talking long to recommend minimum rates of wages as the board held only two meetings in last six months,” he said.

The minimum wage of garment workers must be set at Tk16,000 to elevate Bangladesh into a middle-income, industrialized country, he added.

The workers’ right body declared that they would form a human-chain in front of the National Press Club on August 4 to press home their demand, reports the UNB.

IBC’s central leaders Amirul Haque Amin, Nazma Aktar, Md Kutub Uddin Ahmed, Md Kamrul Hasan, Md Kobirul Hasan, Md Mofidul Islam, were also present in the press conference.
