BGMEA warns of factory shutdown

BGMEA, along with its former presidents in a meeting at their headquarters in Dhaka, remarked that although most of the factories’ workers had rejoined, some were still abstaining from work

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) yesterday warned readymade garment workers of shutting down factories under Section 13(1) of the Bangladesh Labour Act 2013, if they do not join work today.

BGMEA, along with its former presidents in a meeting at their headquarters in Dhaka, remarked that although most of the factories’ workers had rejoined, some were still abstaining from work.

This is why they extended their previous deadline to another day, from Monday to Tuesday, to implement its previous declaration of shutting down the factories if workers did not join work.

Former BGMEA presidents Abdus Salam Murshedy and Atiqul Islam, former FBCCI president AK Azad, current board members and leading apparel exporters were also present at the meeting.

On Sunday, BGMEA President Md Siddiqur Rahman had announced that apparel workers will not get paid if they do not go back to the workplace from Monday.

Despite the warning and government wage revision, workers on Monday staged demonstration and abstained from work.

“Most of the workers have joined the factory today (Monday) after the announcement of revised wage structure. Workers of 20 to 25 factories did not join the work ignoring the government decision,” BGMEA president Md Siddiqur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune.
