As part of their protests, the workers will hold a 24-hour strike on Tuesday

Around 50,000 workers of nine state-owned jute mills of Khulna and Jessore staged a protest at Khalishpur New Market Road on Sunday to press home their nine-point demand.

Bangladesh Jute Mills Sramik League Central President, Shordar Motahar Uddin, and leaders Murad Hossain, Hemayet Uddin Azadi, and Khalilur Rahman, were present at the pre-demonstration rally with CBA (Collective Bargaining Agent) and non-CBA leaders.

Speakers at the rally urged implementing the recommendations made by the National Wages and Productivity Commission in 2015. The recommendation includes giving retired workers provident and gratuity funds, providing arrears of life insurance policies for deceased workers, reinstating terminated and suspended workers, appointing workers and making their jobs permanent as per the law, allotting funds for buying jute in the jute season, and undertaking a BMRE (balancing, modernization, rehabilitation and expansion) scheme to increase the productivity of factories.

Previously, the workers had called for a seven-day movement, demanding necessary fund allocations at jute fields, clearance of pending wages, formation of a national wage commission, and payment of weekly wages on time.

On the fourth day of the movement, jute mill workers gathered in front of Khulna's Platinum Jubilee Jute Mills, Crescent Jute Mills, Khalishpur Jute Mills, Daulatpur Jute Mills, Dighalia Star Jute Mills, Alim Jute Mills, JJI Jute Mill, Eastern Jute Mill and Karpeting Jute Mill, after which they staged a protest.

As part of their protests, the workers will hold a 24-hour strike on Tuesday, a 48-hour strike on March 19, and a meeting in Dhaka on March 24, where they will announce their next course of action.
