This year, the trend of meeting high prices is not present among customers, they are rather opting for finding the products of their desire

With Eid knocking at the door, all the shopping malls, and the makeshift street shops in the capital are crowded with customers from all walks of life, all aiming to buy new clothes, and other lifestyle items for their near and dear ones.

Most of the shops in the city markets were found busy selling commodities, and customers were also found to be busy purchasing, and hopping from one shopping mall to another.

While visiting different shopping malls, and streets in the capital yesterday, it was found that salesmen and vendors of different market outlets, footpaths, and makeshift shops were busy selling their goods to a rush of shoppers.

The range of items sold include, sarees, dresses, clothes, punjabis, shoes, jewellery, prayer caps, perfumes, leather products, spectacles, wristwatches, crockeries, furniture, and more.

This year, the trend of meeting high prices is not present among customers, they are rather opting for finding the products of their desire.

The crowded list of shopping markets include, New Market, Gawsia, Chadni Chawk, Hawkers Market, Elephant Road, Eastern Mollika, Eastern Plaza, RAPA Plaza, Price Plaza, Sunrise Plaza, Orchard Point, Bashundhara City, Mouchak, Jamuna Future Park, and a plethora of other markets and strip plazas.

Although a huge number of people have already gone to the villages for celebrating the holy Eid-ul-Fitr with their families, movement of city dwellers, to the shopping malls, have increased in the last moment,” a shop owner Muniruzzaman told Dhaka Tribune.

Sales are showing an upward trend for the last couple of days. "We are passing a busy time selling all kinds of clothes, especially cotton punjabi, and Salwar Kamiz," said Shafiur Rahman, manager at Aarong’s Dhanmondi outlet.

Meherun Akhtar, a housewife from Mirpur, said she enjoys last-minute Eid shopping every year. "My husband has already finished shopping for everyone in the family. But I'm taking some time to buy clothes for some of my relatives," she added.

Sajal Ghosh, a salesperson at Elephant Road, said male shoppers were mainly buying apparels, and female shoppers were busy purchasing cosmetics items. He expected sales worth Tk50,000 in the last two days before Eid.

Many have opted for purchasing products online, through various e-commerce websites, in order to avoid the hassle, and congestion of people in the markets.

Deployment of law enforcers at different points, and marketplaces, as well as engagement of private security men at shopping malls, by the authorities concerned, have ultimately created a foolproof security arrangement for the businesses as well as shoppers.

Bangladesh Police have taken additional security measures across Bangladesh ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr to facilitate the observing of the festival in a peaceful and safe environment.

On June 1, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said they took area-wise security measures, deploying additional forces, while over 10,000 law enforcers will guard the capital during the Eid vacation.

Masudur Rahman, deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police said: “Police members are patrolling different streets, and important points. The capital city will become empty during Eid, thus additional security measures will be taken to provide security at residential areas, banks, financial institutions, and gold shops to avoid any untoward incident.”
