The ministry handout slams dishonest traders

The Ministry of Commerce said yesterday that the market had sufficient stocks of onion to meet the local demand of the key cooking ingredient.

It slammed traders for abnormal price hike of onion.

“Locally harvested onion, Murikata, and huge quantity of imported ones are hitting market every day,” said a press release of the ministry, issued yesterday.

As a result, the supply of onion in each market was enough, the release added.

It said the government was providing all kinds of supports to onion importers, although the prices of onion were being hiked by traders irrationally.

Onion prices have once again jumped by Tk30-80 per kg in last few days despite the arrival of newly harvested local variety Murikata in local market.

Visiting several kitchen markets in the capital on Sunday per kg of the local onion was found selling at Tk200 on an average, a jump from Tk120 on just three days ago, while imported ones’ prices rose to Tk80-130 per kg, up by Tk30.

The prices saw ups and downs in last few months and hit the highest Tk260 per kg last month.

To tackle the soaring onion price situation, the ministry was going to strengthen its market drive to ensure fair prices of the essential commodities, including onions, the release said further.

To this end, the ministry sent directives to divisional and deputy commissioners for strengthening the market monitoring as early as possible.

Meanwhile, the ministry urged the traders to preserve their all invoices and other documents to help the authorities check the prices.

Besides, the businesses were urged to display the prices of essential commodities including onion in front of their outlets.

The ministry, however, said no businesses would be harassed unfairly, but legal actions would be taken against unscrupulous traders.

The ministry said that it stepped up the open market sales of onion at Tk35 per kg through 200 trucks across the country including in the capital.

Besides the truck sale by the TCB, many importers and social organizations are selling onion at Tk45 per kg at different spots of the country to mitigate the crisis of onion.
