Apparel workers yesterday staged demonstrations to demand their due wages in Dhaka, Savar and Narayanganj.
Workers protested at Amtali area of Mohakhali in the capital demanding a clearance of their wages and dues.
Banani police station Officer-In-Charge Nur-e-Azam Miah said: “Workers of a garment factory have blocked the Mohakhali-Banani road demanding a clearance of their wages and dues.”
Earlier, a meeting was held between the owners of the garment factory, Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and other parties concerned about clearing the wages. However, no decision was reached at the meeting. Later today (Saturday), the workers took to the streets, the OC said.
The factory authorities, for their part, assured the workers that their dues would be soon cleared.
According to the agitated workers, many of them had not received their wages for one to two months.
Protests continue in Savar
Workers of an RMG and steel factory at Ashulia and Dhamrai protested over due wages in Savar yesterday.
They kept the Dhaka-Aricha highway blocked for several hours.
Police rushed to the spot and had to use water cannon and tear gas shells to disperse the agitating workers.
Witnesses said workers of Magpie Group at Amtala area in Ashulia protested over non-payment of their due wages. The workers of Sarker Steel at Balitha area in Dhamrai went for similar action.
Later they gathered on the Dhaka-Aricha highway and blocked vehicular movement for several hours.
Jaane Alam Khan, assistant superintendent of Dhaka-1 Industrial Police, said the police had met with the management of the factories, who pledged to clear all the workers' wages by May 20.
Workers stage demo in Narayanganj
Hundreds of workers of a garment factory staged demonstrations on Saturday in front of the Shaheed Minar at Chashara demanding their pending salaries before Eid-ul-Fitr.
Workers of HR Fashion, located in Fatullah upazila’s Hajiganj area, gathered demanding payment of their due salaries.
They alleged that the factory management had promised to pay their wages for March and April on multiple occasions, but reneged on the promises every time.
Md Sohel, owner of HR Fashion, said he was trying his best to pay all the due wages of the workers before Eid.
