The recruits would serve as Pathao Food's delivery agents

Pathao and Apex have teamed up to provide employment for transgender and specially-abled individuals as part of their efforts to create a more inclusive society.

With the support of TransEnd, a social welfare organisation that empowers the transgender community through education, training, employment and entrepreneurship, 50 individuals would initially be hired as Pathao Food’s delivery agents, an initiative that would allow the persons from the disadvantaged community to earn a respectable living.

“Bangladesh has come a long way -- we are getting wishes and appreciation in the international arena. There is a need to change the mindset in parallel with this progress,” said Asaduzzaman Noor, member of the parliament, at the event held at Shahabuddin Park in the capital’s Gulshan on Monday.

And facilitating income generation for the trans community is one such progressive move, he added.

“Empowerment is the key to moving forward,” said Syed Nasim Manzur, managing director of Apex.

A society can only prosper when every individual -- regardless of caste, gender -- can be recognised and empowered.

“Let's change our perspective and learn to give people the respect they deserve. We are all human beings, we all have a story, and everyone's story is important. The soul has no gender. The real courage is to have self-confidence without imitating others and to put it into action,” Manzur added.

Those who are employed as delivery agents will go on to participate in more gainful economic activities in future, said Atiqul Islam, the mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation.

“The Northern City Corporation was, is, and will continue to support transgender people in their skills development and job creation in the future,” he added.

This is the perfect way to celebrate the nation’s 50th birth anniversary, said Fahim Ahmed, president of Pathao.

“I am incredibly happy that we got a chance to include these individuals in our vision for Moving Bangladesh,” he added.
