Evaly’s liabilities to merchants is over 205C

In an earlier response to queries sought by the ministry, Evaly said it owed Tk311 crore to more than 200,000 customers

Controversial e-commerce platform Evaly’s liability to its merchants stand at Tk205.86 crore, according to its reply to queries sought earlier by the Ministry of Commerce.

Hafizur Rahman, director general at WTO Cell of the ministry confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune on Sunday.

"We have received the reply from Evaly and formed a committee to look into the matter. The committee will study its liabilities and business policies before taking the next course of action,” the ministry official added.

As per the reply, the platform claims assurance of paying back its merchants and customers by allowing them to realize 20% profit from sales.

However, when contacted Evaly Managing Director Mohammad Rassel did not respond to any queries.

According to other sources at the Commerce Ministry, Rassel has sought a meeting with the ministry which is in the process of being organized.

Hafizur Rahman also said any decision will be taken in the interests of the customer: "We will focus on the interest of customers and merchants. They are our first priority.”

Meanwhile, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has sought Evaly’s documents to investigate allegations of embezzlement.  

The ACC investigation team has sent letters to the Commerce Ministry, the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit of the Bangladesh Bank, City Corporation, the Registrar of Joint Stock Companies and Firms (RJSC), the Criminal Investigation Department, and some other agencies.

The ACC launched an inquiry into Evaly on July 8 following a Commerce Ministry request for legal action over alleged embezzlement of Tk338 crore Evaly took in advance from customers and owed to merchants.

However, according to a statement submitted to the commerce ministry by Evaly, the total liabilities of the e-commerce platform amounted to Tk543 crore as of July 15 with an additional debt of Tk1 crore for shareholder equity.
