Merchants are seeking government support

After the huge commotion regarding Evaly this week, another e-commerce platform Dhamaka Shopping has come under the spotlight again.

Suppliers of the e-commerce platform have claimed that they are yet to receive Tk200 crore from the company.

The statement was made at a press conference at Dhaka Reporters Unity in the capital’s Segunbagicha.

According to the President of Dhamakashopping.com Sellers’ Association, Jahangir Alam Emon—there are around 650 entrepreneurs who have supplied 2,000 different types of products to the online platform since last December.

He said in a written statement that, as per the agreement with Invariant Telecom Bangladesh Ltd (Dhamaka Shopping’s parent company), the e-commerce platform is supposed to pay the dues within 10 working days of supplying the products.

It has been 160 days and the sellers are yet to receive the payments.

The merchants have also claimed that they were not issued any cheques despite repeated requests to the senior officials of Invariant Telecom and Dhamaka Shopping.

He mentioned that customers are yet to receive around one lakh deliveries of products worth Tk100 crore.

"As young and SME traders, we have been running businesses by borrowing money from relatives and banks. Now, we are on our way to go broke," said Baharul Alam, joint general secretary of the association.

Warning the e-commerce platform to disburse the due payments-- Baharul Islam, vice-president of the forum said: "If the problem is not solved, we'll take legal actions."

Prior to this, they have urged Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi through a letter to take necessary steps so that the money owed can be disbursed.

The e-commerce platform has reportedly collected large sums of money in advance from customers, luring them through various discounts ranging from 40 to 50%.
