RMG turnaround: BGMEA seeks support from big US brands

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has sought the support of world-famous brands and designers to order their apparel requirements from Bangladesh.

The apex trade organization of the local apparel industry also shared the industry innovations, efficiency and capacity optimization of the sector with the renowned design houses.

BGMEA President Faruque Hassan requested such collaborations in separate meetings with top officials of Dreamwave and Amerex Group, during his strategic visit to the United States of America.

In a meeting with David Grazi, president, and Albert Daniel, global vice-president (sourcing) of Dreamwave in New York recently, BGMEA proposed a joint collaboration program with them to start unconditional sourcing from Bangladesh and build capacity together by understanding their specific needs in technical, social compliance, and sustainability sectors.

Dreamwave is a global sourcing and manufacturing company offering a vast network of global manufacturing capabilities and a wide variety of materials through in-depth fabric and trim supplier resources.

Their manufacturing network includes fully compliant factories in a number of apparel manufacturers, including Bangladesh.

Moreover, it is the major sourcing partner of Walt Disney World Clothing.

At the meeting with Dreamwave, they discussed some other issues including the potential of Bangladesh as a sourcing country for activewear, outerwear, swimwear and workwear.

The BGMEA president requested Dreamwave to increase its sourcing from Bangladesh, especially garments produced from man-made or synthetic fibre.

Moreover, they also discussed how BGMEA and Dreamwave could work together to showcase the current initiative of Bangladesh as an apparel supplier including compliances in the RMG industry.

In a separate meeting with Amerex Group, the BGMEA president also stressed collaboration with them on industry innovation and efficiency.

The New York-based Amerex Group designs and manufactures outerwear, swimwear and ready to wear for women and children to the customers of the United States.

Amerex Group is the major apparel retail partner of Amazon, Belk Leggett, Lord & Taylor, JC Penney Co and other famous brands.

BGMEA President Faruque Hassan met with Ira Ganger, president and CEO of Amerex Group in New York recently and shared the present situation of Bangladesh’s RMG industry and its strategic priorities especially in the areas of industry innovation, efficiency and capacity optimization.

They also highlighted the industry’s increased focus on diversification of products, especially non-cotton or man-made fibre and the garment of high-end segment.

The BGMEA president also shared the progress of establishment of a new Centre of Innovation, Efficiency and Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) at the newly built headquarters of the BGMEA at Uttara region of the capital.

“The center will play a vital role to enhance the competitiveness of the readymade garment industry of Bangladesh,” said the BGMEA President.

He also said that the Centre will strive to extract knowledge about best business practices, most-advanced technology and latest trends of the global fashion industry.

“It will also inject innovative ideas for the apparel industry of Bangladesh through training, workshops and stakeholders’ gatherings,” he added.

They also spoke about the possibilities and potential of BGMEA and Amerex Group collaboration in upscaling the capabilities of the apparel industry of Bangladesh which will accomplish the strategic priorities including industry innovation.

In both meeting, former president of the BGMEA Md Shafiul Islam (Mohiuddin), BGMEA Director Abdullah Hil Rakib, officials from the US apparel brand Dreamwave, Brian McElwain, executive vice-president (sourcing purchasing and production) of Amerex Group were present.

Meanwhile, the BGMEA president has been in the US for the past few weeks along with other delegates from the organization.

During his visit, he discussed the country's apparel industry with various government and non-government organizations, financial organizations, brands, media groups and sustainable factory activists.
