Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) has directed commercial banks to freeze the accounts of eight people, including Cox's Bazar Superintendent of Police (SP) ABM Masud Hossain, former Teknaf police station officer-in-charge Pradeep Kumar Das, and former in-charge of Baharchhara investigation centre inspector Liakat Ali.
Five other individuals are -- Chumki Karan, Pratim Kumar Das, Pratush Kumar Das, Dilip, and film actor Ilias Cobra.
The BFIU, on behalf of Bangladesh Bank, on Monday issued a letter to commercial banks asking the institutions to freeze the accounts of the individuals for the next 30 days, reports Bangla Tribune.
The financial intelligence unit also asked the banks to send details of all their accounts in three days since the issuance of the letter.
The BFIU is the central agency of the government that was established at the Bangladesh Bank headquarters in 2002 to deal with money laundering crimes.
In 2010, it was renamed as BFIU with operational independence from the previous name of Anti Money Laundering Department.
The unit took the move three weeks after the killing of retired army officer Sinha Mohammad Rashed Khan in Cox's Bazar.
On the night of July 31, former major Sinha was killed in a police firing at the Shamlapur police check post on Marine Drive in Teknaf's Baharchhara.
On August 5, Sinha's elder sister Sharmin Shahriar Ferdous filed a case with the Cox's Bazar Chief Judicial Magistrate Court against nine people, including Pradeep and Liakat.
