Gold import policy by this year

“The government will prepare a policy for importing gold which will help this sector flourish and create an overseas market for exports.” Finance Minister AMA Muhith made the remark as part of his budget statement for the fiscal year 2017-2018. “Gold has always been a traditional business in Bangladesh. But since there is no hard and fast rule for the import of gold, the sector has not been able to flourish in a befitting manner,” said the finance minister. In his statement, he mentioned various proposals by the bodies associated with the sector to formulate a realistic guideline to facilitate importing gold. Minister Muhith hoped to formulate the policy within this calendar year. Bangladesh Jeweller Association (Bajus) has for quite some time been demanding an effective gold policy to prevent gold smuggling in Bangladesh.
