Bangladesh should set up a halal test institute like BSTI, speakers say

Speakers at a seminar have urged the government and the businesses to come forward to set up a halal industry in Bangladesh to boost economy.

There is a demand for halal products to both Muslim and non-Muslim people across the world, they said.

The speakers came up with the suggestion at a seminar on "Halal Certification Standards and Challenges: Opportunities for Bangladesh Market" organized by Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) held at its auditorium in Dhaka on Thursday.

They also said Bangladesh should set up a halal test institute like Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) to monitor the standard and quality of products.

Bangladesh Investment Development Authority’s Executive Chairman Kazi M Aminul Islam said: "We are interested in halal-based goods considering the Muslim population. These products have domestic value in western countries too. So we can also grab the market for the sake of boosting our economy.

He asked businesses to come forward to produce international standard halal products.  “The government policy is needed for that.''

United Arab Emirates Ambassador to Bangladesh Saed Mohamed Saed said his country is ready to assist Bangladesh in making halal goods.

“Halal goods are very healthy. It has demand across the world such as Africa, South Asia and Europe.”

The envoy further said: "All goods such as food items, cosmetics and clothes are being supplied by the UAE after halal test.”

Ossama Emam, head of the sales and marketing department of Dubai-based RACS Quality Certificates Issuing Services, presented the keynote paper at the seminar, while DCCI president Abul Kasem Khan gave the welcome address.
