Govt to offer SEZ to Thai investors
Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed on Wednesday said a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) will be offered to Thai investors to attract foreign investment especially in pharmaceuticals and clothing industry in Bangladesh. The minister was addressing the inaugural ceremony of a four-day-long annual trade fair titled “Thailand Week” at a city hotel in the capital. The Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP) under the Ministry of Commerce of Thailand and Thai Embassy in Dhaka jointly organised the fair. “Bangladesh is moving towards a positive economic development growth. It has potential to become an investment destination for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) with a very liberal investment policy.”

With an aim to attract FDI, Bangladesh has set the target to establish 100 SEZs and if the Thai investors want to make investment here, a SEZ will be offered to them. The initiative would increase business ties between the investors of two countries helping to boost bilateral trade as well as reduce trade gap, added Tofail. Bangladesh’s export to Thailand stood at $31 million while that of Thailand to Bangladesh is $304 million. “Bangladesh has the potential to become an investment destination for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) with a very liberal investment policy,” said Tofail. The commerce minister also called upon the local businessmen to interact with Thai businesses to boost the country’s trade volume. In his address, Thai Ambassador to Dhaka, Panpimon Suwannapongse, said the event is an effort of Thai government to expand opportunities to the business communities of both Bangladesh and Thailand, which will consequently strengthen economical ties. “Producers and exporters of Thai products have taken part directly in the fair, and our main focus is to develop business to business contact,” he added. The orgainser said the fair starts from 10am and continues till 8pm every day. Thai products and services related to medicare, bedding accessories, electrical appliances, food, fruits, decorative items including kid’s goods, handbag, etc, are on display in the fair. The exposition has a one-stop support desk at DITP’s booth, where visitors can get information like the list of international trade fairs in Thailand, list of Thai exporters or manufacturers and suitable sourcing partners.
