In order to cater to the needs of patients, the government has equipped all medical college hospitals, specialised hospitals, and general hospitals in the country with modern machinery and technology

Health Minister Mohammed Nasim told the parliament on Thursday that the government is formulating guidelines regarding medical treatment abroad for Bangladeshi patients.

He made the disclosure responding to a starred question from Dr Enamur Rahaman, MP of Dhaka 19.

The minister said some patients go abroad every year mainly for four reasons -- due to their economic solvency, love for treatment abroad, health tourism, and in some cases, for the lack of suitable treatment facilities in the country.

In order to cater to the needs of patients, the government has equipped all medical college hospitals, specialised hospitals, and general hospitals in the country with modern machinery and technology to ensure better treatment, he said.

Moreover, there are some modern private hospitals which provide treatment maintaining international standards, where patients from other countries are receiving treatment too, he added.

Under the circumstances, he said: "The work on formulating guidelines for Bangladeshi patients regarding receiving treatment abroad is underway."

The minister, however, could not present ny statistics about how many people go abroad from Bangladesh for treatment and the expenditure involved.
