Ready-made garment (RMG) workers have rejected the proposed new minimum wage of Tk6,360 recommended by the garment owners' association.

They also rejected a minimum wage of Tk12,020 proposed by the workers' representative on Tuesday, reports UNB.

The rejections were made at a press briefing at Mukti Bhaban by the leaders of Garment Workers Trade Union Kendra (an organization of RMG workers).

The leaders also commented that the new wage range proposed by the owners did not reflect the needs of the workers and that it was not in line with the Tk16,000 minimum wage demanded by the workers.

The executive secretary of the organization Kazi Ruhul Amin said that the workers' representative Shamsun Nahar Bhuiyan placed the proposal to raise the baseline monthly salary from Tk5,300 to Tk12,020 before the Minimum Wage Board for the industry during a meeting on Monday.

On the other hand, the RMG business owners’ representative, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) President Md Siddiqur Rahman, proposed to raise the minimum wage to Tk6,360 per month.

But representatives from all trade unions decided Tk16,000 should be the new minimum wage and had urged Shamsun Nahar to propose this amount to the board but she proposed Tk12,020 instead, he added.

The general secretary of the body, Joli Talukder alleged: "The workers' representative Shamsun Nahar is also a leader of ruling political party and she proposed the minimum wage ignoring the workers' demand to fulfill the desire of the owners rather than workers."

She also said if the representative had presented the original proposal that the workers had demanded before the board, the RMG workers would have been able to get a good deal through negotiation with the owners.

The speakers urged the government for the quick realization of a minimum wage of Tk16,000 with a basic of Tk10,000, otherwise they would go for a tougher movement.

They decided to hold a rally near National Press Club on Friday morning and organize protest marches in every industrial area on that day.
