PM: Millions of lives at risk if Paris deal not implemented
“Lives and livelihoods of millions of people will continue to be at risk unless we deliver on our commitments on climate change issues,” the prime minister told the three-day gathering of the 22nd Conference of the Parties (COP 22) of the United Nation Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). “Now, this is the time to move forward to turn decisions into actions,” she said. Hasina said the climate conference bears a special significance as the historic agreement signed last year in Paris which had “created a solid ground for a meaningful cooperation in combating climate change impacts” is expected to be enforced this year. The premier also highlighted that Bangladesh, facing a multitude of climate-induced threats of its own, was one of the first countries to sign and ratify the Paris Agreement. “We must be prepared to share equitable burden to fulfil our promises of making the world a safer and better place for our future generations," Hasina said. “Unless we address this challenge of climate-induced migration appropriately, we will never be able to attain the objectives of the Sustainable Development Goals.” HE Sheikh Hasina, #Bangladesh "Lives and livelihoods of millions are at risk unless we deliver on our #ParisAgreement commitments" pic.twitter.com/3kniKMky9c Sheikh Hasina said Bangladesh was also the first country to set up a 'Climate Change Trust Fund' of US$400 million from its own resources. "Bangladesh has achieved success in disaster management despite its coastal areas being highly vulnerable to climate-related calamities, such as floods and cyclones," she added. The prime minister highlighted Bangladesh's early warning system, cyclone shelters and river weeds cultivation, saying these measures had significantly reduced the loss of lives and properties during natural disasters. Water security Laying importance on water security, Sheikh Hasina - who is also a member of the UN High Level Panel on Water - reiterated her government's commitments to the action plan endorsed by the Panel in New York last September. "We must ensure safe drinking water and sanitation for all through effective water governance," she said, stressing the need for a new 'global fund' to support research, innovation and technology to achieve the sustainable development goals on water. Heads of state and government from 80 countries and senior ministers from 115 countries began convening in Morocco’s former imperial city of Marrakech on Monday for the three-day, high-level segment. King of Morocco Mohammed VI, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, UNFCC Executive Secretary Patricia Espinosa and COP 22 President Salaheddine Mezouar received the heads of state and government at Bab lghli, the conference venue of COP 22. Sheikh Hasina arrived on Monday afternoon at the head of a 58-member delegation which includes Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali, Environment and Forests Minister Anwar Hossain Manju, Water Resources Minister Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud and Deputy Minister of Environment and Forests Abdullah Al Islam Jacob. The premier is scheduled to leave for home on Wednesday afternoon and is expected to reach Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Thursday morning.
