Conference on climate change research starts today
The third such conference is being held to find effective measures in confronting climate change with researchers, policy makers and development agencies, said Dr Saleemul Huq, director of ICCCAD. “Gobeshoba aims to evaluate research and address policy needs and gaps to find effective ways to move forward, this year’s conference is built on the momentum gathered at the last two conferences engaging researchers, policy makers, implementation agencies and support organisations,” he added. Gobeshona is a knowledge network for research on climate change in Bangladesh which aims to make the research more effective and ready for the implementation practitioners. A total of 23 thematic sessions will be held during the four day-long conference where a large number experts and researchers from Bangladesh and abroad will participate this year. According to the 5th Assessment report of Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Bangladesh has been identified as being at specific risk from climate change due to its exposure to sea-level rise and extreme events like salinity intrusion, drought, erratic rainfall and tidal surge which will cause huge disruptions to the country’s food cultivation as well as livelihood security. The Gobeshona conference consists of several plenary sessions and presentations on various sectors including climate change and livelihoods, agriculture, water, health, migration, gender, renewable energy, natural resource management, political economy of climate change, disaster risk reduction, adaptation technologies, urbanization, ecosystem resilience and  loss and damage.
