Members of the civil society on Wednesday stressed the need to form a National Climate Commission and an identical National Climate Regulation headed by the prime minister, amending the Climate Change Trust (BCCT) Act 2010.
They were speaking at a view exchange program called “Civil Society View Exchange Program and Workshop,” organized by Network on Climate Change, Bangladesh (NCC’B).
Jahangirnagar University Prof Sharmind Nilormi was present as chief guest. She said that although the government was carrying out large scale projects with local and foreign monetary support to combat climate change, people most at risk were yet to benefit from them.
“Good governance is imperative. As the primary initiative for this, a joint monitoring system— by the parliamentary standing committee, local public representatives, experts, non-governmental organizations and media— should have started by amending the 2010 Climate Change Trust Act,” Prof Sharmind said at the program.
She also said the existing institutions and organizations that work to combat climate change in the country should remain united for the greater interest of Bangladesh as well as the vulnerable people, and place their demands before the political parties ahead of the upcoming election.
Coastal Development Partnership (CDP) Executive Director Jahangir Hasan Masum, Manusher Jonno Foundation’s Climate Change Program’s Deputy Manager Zakia Naznin, International Center for Climate Change and Development’s (ICCCAD) Expert Sarder Shafiqul Alam, Oxfam Bangladesh’s Program Officer Ashish Kumar Bakshi, Save the Children Climate Change Bangladesh’s Project Manager Badrul Alam, The Daily Janakantha City Editor Kawsar Rahman also spoke during the program.
The decision to form the Bangladesh Climate Action Forum was also taken at the meeting.
