Facts from Japan

Japan is one of the most interesting countries in the world, with full of amazing facts that surround it. The national sport of Japan is sumo wrestling, which brings in a lot of national and international attention. While we’re on that topic, Japanese Samurai were ancient warriors of great honour and pride. They were known as the best warriors in Japan. Their main weapon was the Katana, a sharp sword with a slight curve to it.

Japanese food is also great. The fact that you need 11 years of training to become a fugu chef (blowfish) is in itself very amazing, and that the chef in training has to eat their own blowfish at the end of their training. The reason for this is that if their dish is not perfect, for example, if the fish is poisonous for being undercooked, they have to experience what they made.

As a result, at the end of their training the chef may die from eating their own food. The world’s most expensive tuna was sold in Japan for $735,000. Did you know that the “fortune cookie” was first made in Kyoto, Japan in the 19th century?

Japanese animated television shows and films (anime) is 60% of the world’s animation and there are close to 130 voice acting schools for anime in Japan. In Japanese “geisha” means, “performing artist.” The first geisha were men but now they are usually women. Japan is also the only country in the world that has had nuclear weapons used against it. For historical references, you can look up the history of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Japan is also a country at great danger as Mount Fuji, the tallest mountain in Japan, is an active volcano. It is also a popular country because of its 18 Nobel Prize winners. Japan’s high-speed trains are known as bullet trains or shinkansen, which connects the main islands, including the Seikan Tunnel connecting Honshu to Hokkaido—the world’s longest railroad tunnel at 54 kilometres (33 miles).
