A Healthy Alternative to Junk Food
We all know that food is the most basic need of human life. Since our childhood our mothers have been nagging us (sorry mom!) to eat healthy, and not to eat “bairer bhaja pora”. But we are all guilty. Our busy lifestyle often does not allow us to eat healthy. Even if it does, do most of us take healthy food regularly or at the right quantity? Mostly, the answer is an obvious “no”. Although there is no data that shows how many Bangladeshis skip breakfast every morning it is common knowledge that the number is increasing every day, special thanks to our hectic daily lifestyle. (Yes, let’s all blame morning classes and office). Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and as per Journal of the American College of Cardiology, research has linked skipping breakfast to a higher risk of problems that can lead to heart disease such as obesity, diabetes and high cholesterol. A study has found out that 97.4% students consume fast food such as burgers, pizzas, and hotdogs instead of healthier alternatives. Most junk foods contain Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) which enhances the taste of food items multifold. There are popular beliefs and researches that say MSG causes obesity, headache, asthma and other body discomforts. Many of us skip meals to get that “desired” zero figure and then eat more than necessary at one go. It does us no good. Whether it is vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates, fibers or even fat; every element is needed for proper body functioning and must be consumed at optimum level. As each of these nutrients has their own individual roles to play in the physical and mental development, a balanced diet will help us to take these nutrients at a proper amount. Smoothies can be an excellent choice of meal replacement for busy people. This is because it contains macro nutrients and all the fibers from the fruits. There are several local outlets who sell delicious smoothies. Boost Juice Bars, an Australian juice and smoothie franchise, is the first international juice bar in Bangladesh, and has recently started operating in the country. They offer over 20 options of smoothies, juices and crushes in three sizes and price points. All these drinks are made from real fruits and vegetables and without added sugar, preservative or any chemicals. These drinks are loaded with low fat milk, oats, honey, yoghurt, real mangoes, passion fruits, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, apples, pineapples, watermelons, oranges, grapes, banana, coconut water, lemons, carrots, spinach, beetroot, mint leaves, cucumber.  All these drinks can be excellent choice of junk food alternative for health conscious people who’re too busy and struggle to make enough time to look after themselves.
