Instagram, Facebook’s photo and video-sharing app, is taking on YouTube in video with a billion users and a new feature

Instagram is planning on giving YouTube some serious competition as it unveils its new long-form video feature in a bid to attract "creators".

The new feature – IGTV – will enable any user to upload long-form videos and will also include "channels" from video "creators". Sound familiar? It’s a format similar to the Google-owned YouTube which has given rise to a new breed of celebrities.

Instagram has given rise to its own kind of celebrities; case in point - Instagram makeup artists and fashionistas.

In the good ol’ days, Instagram was a simple photo sharing app; but with its many updates it has adapted features similar to Snapchat, and now YouTube.

Instagram said on Wednesday it now has more than one billion active users. It has become the fourth Facebook platform to hit the billion-user mark, including the namesake social network with more than two billion users, and the messaging applications WhatsApp and Messenger.

As Facebook itself has moved deeper into video, Instagram will become a direct competitor to YouTube with IGTV.

Created for smartphones

Instagram officials said IGTV is built to be used on a smartphone, and boosts the time for videos from the previous limit of one minute.

Anyone can be a creator – the new feature enables users to upload their very own IGTV videos in the app or on the web to start their own channel.

IGTV is built to support videos that are full screen and vertical. It will allow any user to upload videos up to 10 minutes long, with the limit for larger accounts at one hour.

Market research company eMarketer estimates Instagram will generate $5.48 billion in net US ad revenue this year, up 70.4% from last year and accounting for more than one-fourth of Facebook's net mobile ad revenue.
