After eight years, Michael Caine settles the dispute over the ending of 'Inception' once and for all
The ambiguous ending scene of “Inception” has been puzzling fans for the past eight years. Some say it was a dream, others say it was reality; fans have been pondering and coming up with theories since the film was released in 2010.
While speaking at a Film 4 Summer Screen showing of Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed thriller, Michael Caine—who played the father-in-law of Leonardo DiCaprio’s character Dom Cobb—shared some insider knowledge on whether Cobb was awake or dreaming in Inception‘s closing sequence.
In the last scene, DiCaprio’s character Dom Cobb reunites with his children, and father-in-law, Miles. As Cobb embraces his kids, the totem keeps spinning on the table- for which the fans still wonder if Cobb was indeed back in reality or still dreaming since the totem spins indefinitely in dreams.
Michael Caine settles the dispute over the ending of Inception once and for all. The 85-year-old actor said during the screening: “When I got the script of Inception, I was a bit puzzled by it, and I told him (Nolan), 'I don't understand where the dream is.'”
“When is it the dream and when is it reality?,' I asked. He (Nolan) said, 'Well, when you're in the scene its reality.' So get that -- if I'm in it, it's reality. If I'm not in it, it's a dream,” the actor further informed the crowd.
Since Caine is in the final scene, it is reality. Case closed. We assume the totem eventually falls.
