Toblerone says it’s halal now

Not everyone was happy with Toblerone’s halal certification

Update : 25 Dec 2018, 09:34 PM

Mondelez, producer of iconic chocolate brand Toblerone, has announced that its factory in Bern, Switzerland received halal certification in April this year.

The company also said the recipe and production process of the chocolate did not need to be changed to meet the requirements for halal certification, reports Australian news portal SBS News.

Halal food refers to food that is prepared in accordance with Islamic standards for consumption, as specified in the Quran. Factories that follow these standards and pass regular inspections can be certified as Halal.

Not everyone was happy with Toblerone’s halal certification, with Jörg Meuthen, federal spokesperson of Germany's far-right AfD party, claiming on social media that the certification showed the “Islamization” of Europe, according to CNN.

However, others were quick to mock those who were boycotting Mondelez, as the production process of Toblerone is unchanged from prior to the certification.
