A unique science summer school launched to prepare students for science universities

Asian University for Women (AUW) and multinational energy giant Chevron have partnered in initiating a one-month summer school to help high-performing female students of secondary and high school level secure places in the world-class science universities.

The five weeks of the Science Summer School will focus on classical mechanics, electricity and magnetism, bioinformatics, mathematics, as well as SAT exam preparation.

The classes are designed to be rigorous and will be taken by a number of distinguished visiting teachers from Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and one from AUW's own faculties. A maximum of 80 secondary and high school students will have the opportunity to participate in the competitive program. Applications will remain open through online and via mail until April 30.

Along with being an opportunity for the participating students to secure places in renowned science universities, the program also provides opportunities for eligible students to receive partial or full scholarship support.

The scholarship will be given depending on their demonstrated financial need. Graduates of the AUW Science Summer School will receive a Certificate of Merit from AUW and Chevron. The program will give the top-performing female student the AUW-Chevron Emerging Women Leader in STEM Award.

The launching program for the initiative took place last week at the Amari Dhaka hotel in the capital. The chief guest of the event was Rubana Huq, a member of the board of trustees of the Asian University for Women and also the managing director of Mohammadi Group.

Ismail Hussain Chowdhury, Director PGPA, Chevron- Bangladesh and Dr Dave Dowland, Registrar of AUW also spoke at the event.

‘International in outlook, but rooted in the contexts and aspirations of the people of Asia,’ AUW is a Chittagong based, regional institution dedicated to women’s education and leadership development. Students from 17 countries attend AUW.

The university seeks women who demonstrate ‘significant academic potential, courage, a sense of outrage at injustice and empathy for those in need’. 72 percent of AUW's students are on full or near-full scholarship funded by private donors from around the world. AUW graduates or former students have pursued graduate studies at a host of top universities around the world, including Stanford, Oxford, Columbia, Brandeis, and Surrey.
