Interview with guitar player Oni Hasan

Former guitarist with leading Bangladeshi heavy rock band Warfaze, Oni Hasan continues to enjoy a large following. With over 222 thousand followers on his Facebook page, Oni is often seen by his fans as a guitar idol.

After an 8-year stint with Warfaze, during which time he played countless live shows with the band and recorded two studio albums, Oni finally left the band for personal reasons and currently lives in China.

But he did not stop making music. Oni has released a number of guitar instrumental tracks and recently entered into a prestigious endorsement deal with the renowned Kiesel Guitars (formerly Carvin Guitars).

In this email interview Oni answers questions about the endorsement, his guitar playing and other related topics. The interview also includes a ‘fan questions’ section, where Oni answers questions submitted by his fans to Dhaka Tribune.

You are a featured artist with Kiesel Guitars. How big a deal is this for you?

Having a guitar endorsement means getting free guitars made according to your specifications which is a big deal on its own, but its even a bigger deal when the guitar company is one of the most renowned companies in the guitar making world. In simple words, it's a milestone for any guitar player.

People say you used to practice guitar 6 hours a day. Is that true?

No, it's actually incorrect. I practiced the guitar every waking moment.

What was the one song or riff or guitar solo that made you want to be a guitarist?

It was none other than the solo in November Rain.

Who were your favourite players when you first picked up the guitar? And who are your favourite players now?

My favourite players back then and now are still the same. I am not a big fan of the current music scene to be honest. I feel that music is gone and it's more of a circus now.

The last original track uploaded on your YouTube channel was 'Until we meet again.' Tell us about this track and what you have been doing musically since you went abroad.

That track came about when I first left the country and realized how much I missed my parents. I've always had this fear at the back of my mind that one day you won't be able to keep everything you love. One day you just have to let go. The song ‘Until we meet again’ is pretty much built upon that.

As for music, I think I have always been active regardless of where I am. I may not be able to perform as much as before, but I’m more active musically than I ever was.

Your playing is probably best described as Vai/Satriani to Dimebag/Petrucci style of guitar playing. Do you enjoy the later generation of metal/instrumental players like Tosin Abbasi and Misha Mansoor?

I respect their music but don’t necessarily enjoy them. I'm more of a 80s and 90s style of music fan.

Name five songs that are currently on your playlist.

Lots of Pantera and Slipknot.

Do you listen to genres other than rock/metal?

Oh yes, I do. I listen to all genres of music from pop to country to rock to metal, as long as they are good music.

If you had to recommend one of your songs to someone who never heard your music, what would it be?

It would probably be Himalayas or Shrine from my instrumental songs, and Naa or Purnota from my Band songs.

What are your top five guitar instrumental songs?

For The Love Of God  Steve Vai, Concerto by Cacophony, Altitudes by Jason Becker, Angel by Marty Friedman, and Technical Difficulties by Racer X.

How familiar are you with the music of your Kiesel co-artists like Frank Gambale andthe late Allan Holdsworth?

Oh, I love both of them. I met Frank Gambale in person during my Shanghai Expo show and we had a long conversation about guitars.

Fan questions

Bijoy Ajijul: When are you coming back?

Currently, I am on a mission to conquer the world. Until my mission is successfully completed I am not looking back.

Mafruz Bin Shoaid Nafis: What is your thought on the current music scene in Bangladesh?

It's on the verge of dying.

Moydul Islam Polash: How do you maintain a schedule of guitar playing, study and workout? Your answer will help a lot of people who try to maintain all these three things together.

I simply wake up at 5:30 am in the morning every single day and maintain a strict schedule.

I only do the things I love doing. I make my own decisions.

If you have a schedule and you strictly maintain it every day then nothing can go wrong. I think what most people lack is consistency. Trust me, I’ve lost many women in my life only due to my strict lifestyle. Ha ha!

AuTul Rahman: Megadeth or Metallica?

Koushik Rahul: What is your favorite guitar of all time besides your custom Kiesel?

Jackson and Caparison.

Saifur Rahaman: Will you join Warfaze after coming back to Bangladesh?

Amit Hasan Rudra: How to compose a good melodic solo?

Follow your heart and not your scales.

Sabbir Hasan Rochi: Did you ever get asked to audition for an artist or band outside of Bangladesh?

I did. But, I rejected most of them as we didn't share the same musical ideology.

Hisham Bin Mustafa: Can the fans ever see Vibe reunite in future?

Vibe might come back but I won't be playing in it. I never liked playing with bands without any visions.

Mohammed Jam: Who taught you playing the guitar?

I am self taught.
