D2_November 26_Know Your Birth Right Workshop

A brilliant birth plan workshop and discussion conducted at EMK centre

In the last decades, the proportion of birth by Cesarean section has vastly increased. This is a multifactorial phenomenon and in many cases country- and culture-specific. Some of the reasons behind this rise is the fear of pain during birth including the pain of uterine contractions, the convenience to schedule the birth when it is most suitable for families or health care professionals, or because it is perceived as being less traumatic for the baby.

Know Your Birth Right, a workshop and discussion on birth plan, an initiative organized by Save the Children, Bangladesh and HerStory Foundation, at EMK Center in Dhaka, featured a diverse group of panelists, who talked about the increasing rate of c-sections in Bangladesh and the pros and cons of both natural vaginal delivery (NVD) and cesarean section (c-section).

Dr Selina Amin, the head of Midwifery Education Program at James P Grant School of Public Health at BRAC University, Farin Doula, co-founder and trainer at Yellow Brick Road, Dr Mariha Chowdhury, consultant at Obstetrics and Gynecology at Praava Health, Nissim Jan Sajid, Lead Psychological Counselor and Additional Managing Director at Psychological Health and Wellness Clinic (PHWC), and Dr Beatrice Ambauen-Berger, consultant and Deputy Medical Director at LAMB hospital spoke at the event.

Zareen Mahmud Hosein, founder of HerStory Foundation and editor of the HerStory books moderated the session.

The panelists spoke about how ceserean section, widely popular in Bangladesh in the recent years, costs more than a normal vaginal delivery and the misconception that c-sections hurt less than NVD.

Sometimes, a mother goes into labour keeping NVD in mind but due to unavoidable circumstances, a c-section might be needed. Speakers said that a mother should always get information from their respective doctors about both types of delivery. The mother should know about the pros and the cons of both NVD and a c-section.

A section of the discussion also focused on postpartum depression and mental healthy related issues all mothers face.

The session ended with an interactive workshop.
