On February 19, five distinguished change-makers of Bangladesh came together and joined the conversation about why green matters. Organized by Sir John Wilson School as a platform for the students to experience, learn and find solutions toward sustaining the planet’s resources and ensure the well-being of the generations to come, the seminar was held at the main campus of United City.
Sabrina Shaheed, principal of the school and Mahenaz Chowdhury, owner and designer of Broque, took the stage to talk about their journeys in up-cycling, gender-neutral fashion wears and creating a collective mindset of sustainable bespoke of clothing. Sadia Jafrin, assistant manager at Bangladesh Petrochemical Company Limited talked about recycling plastic.
Samiya Selim, associate professor and the director of Center for Sustainable Development at the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) participated in a quiz game with students to highlight the reasons and ways to combat climate crisis.
Shammi Huda, chairman of the Naafco Group of companies shared his experience on sustainable farming. Fahim Zaman, facilities manager at Creative Conservation Alliance (CCA), spoke about how they are involved in the conservation breeding of threatened turtles and tortoises in Bangladesh. Two of the students of Sir John Wilson School Shahaar Selim of class 8 and Shama Ahmed from class 5 did a presentation on ethical tourism.
Students from the senior section displayed projects based on innovative ideas of sustainable living. The session ended with a gallery walk where the junior section students displayed their posters on climate crisis.
