A drive for survival

This is She -- a Canadian company that recently started their operations in Bangladesh -- has targeted and raised funds worth BDT 7 lacs, and is collaborating with some non-profit organizations (NPOs) to help the rickshaw pullers during this Ramadan.

The whole world is shaken and facing a lot of difficulties due to COVID-19. While most of us are privileged enough to sit at home with enough necessities in stock to run a month, there are people out there who are struggling every day, regardless of the circumstances, to make their ends meet. These people are the unfortunate daily labourers who expend their physical efforts and strength to earn their living -- which is still not even at its bare minimum right now -- and support their families. They are not financially stable enough to sit at home and wait out the pandemic to end. Survival of the fittest is not even in question for them, as they are more afraid of dying in hunger and poverty than dying from the virus. Among such vulnerable groups of people, the rickshaw pullers are also affected.

As most industries have shut-down, businesses are at halt and movements of people are restricted, it seems like the world had stopped moving for these rickshaw pullers. In a recent news report, a rickshaw puller said: "I don't know how I will buy food for my family as I earned only Tk75 today, while I would have to pay Tk100 rent for the rickshaw.”

It is our duty to aid the deprived. It’s about time we come together and take the weight off their shoulders and support their living.

Believing in this very cause, This is She is organizing "The Rickshaw Pullers' Drive - Help Them Survive". Through this campaign, This is She wants to bring a change and make a difference in these lives, who are shedding blood, sweat, and tears every day to make their ends meet and provide for their families. The brand wants to appreciate their rigorous hard-work and assist them during their daily battles of survival by standing with them in such crucial times. This initiative wants to donate Tk1,000 each to 700 rickshaw pullers with the funds raised so far and, in addition, collaborate with two foundations -- Sukorma Foundation and Drishti -- to distribute food packages and snacks.

Donations are coming in every day, from the smallest amount to as much as one’s heart desires to contribute to this cause. Currently, This is She has a target of BDT 7 lacs, of which they have raised BDT 6,33,870 so far, reaching approximately 90% of their initial goal. In order to reach the target, they encourage everyone to contribute and help these people in need.

“In the upcoming weeks, we have plans to distribute money and food to rickshaw pullers, and we welcome any amount of donations wholeheartedly," said Kunwal Malik, founder and CEO of This is She. "We urge you to come join this humble movement and make a difference along with us. Because without you we are not enough and with you, together, we can move Bangladesh!”

The Campaign Coordinator for "The Rickshaw Pullers’ Drive", Mayeesha Samiha, added: “Your small contribution can surely bring some change into the lives of these rickshaw pullers, who are constantly working hard and fighting tooth and nail to win the battle of survival. Therefore, I encourage everyone to do their part and help these people in need.”
