Bangladesh has been ranked as the most vegetarian country in the world, reports The Telegraph.
The news outlet published the report on March 26, marking the 48th Independence Day of Bangladesh.
The Telegraph cited a study by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations which shows figures from the year 2009. According to the study, only four kilos of meat are consumed by each Bangladeshi in a year.
This stands in stark contrast to the 120 kilos of meat consumed by a person in the US – the world's most “meat-hungry” country.
Bangladesh is followed by India, Burundi and Sri Lanka as the least meat consuming countries, while the top 10 in the category is completed by five African countries: Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Eritrea, Mozambique, Gambia and Malawi, writes The Telegraph.
On the other hand, the US is followed by the Middle Eastern state Kuwait, with Australia, the Bahamas and Luxembourg occupying the rest of the top five positions.
Several of the most “meat-hungry” countries also fall under the most obese countries in the world, with Kuwait occupying the ninth, the Bahamas 10th and the US the 12th positions in the category.
