Former health secretary Syed Monjurul Islam has been appointed as the new Deputy Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer of International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDRB).
The ICDDRB board of trustees announced the appointment.
Monjurul retired as a secretary of health ministry in October last year. He had previously represented the government in many a committee including The Global Fund, GAVI and the ICDDRB board of trustees.
The press release quoted Dr Richard Smith, Chair of the Board, ICDDRB, as saying:"The competition for this post was intense, and Monjurul Islam has emerged at the head of an impressive field. His intimate knowledge of health, Bangladesh, and international organisations will strengthen ICDDRB's work in conducting research to improve the health of the people of Bangladesh and other low and middle income countries.”
He hoped that Monjurul would help ensure that ICDDRB's discoveries are widely implemented.
Established in the 1960s, the ICDDRB is an autonomous body which is committed to solving public health problems in low- and middle-income countries through innovative scientific research.
