2017: A lot of sci-fi and fantasy in store

Update : 08 Jan 2017, 07:07 PM
The citizens of geekdom can now walk into almost any room with their heads held high. For generations, it wasn’t deemed cool to be a nerd or a geek. Well, the tables have turned, as we’ve been saying for years now, and they rule the roost. From our smart-home appliances and love for Star Wars content, the game has turned towards a host of amazing sci-fi and fantasy films and television shows. And 2017 has plenty in store. So, no, this isn’t a review or a top 10 list of must-have gadgets. It’s an exciting look into the future of technology through films. Movies and television programs may be a form of entertainment, but it would be nothing without the advancement of technology. As mentioned, we celebrate this advancement by being entertained as we have been in the past. We’ve seen pretty cool gadgets come to life from what we’ve experienced in films, such as Minority Report. There shall be more in store from the shows and movies we watch in 2017, and here they are. It’s time to geek out.

Star Trek: Discovery

Here you go Trekkies, a new series from the Star Trek franchise on television. The new crew and ship will be revealed this coming May, led by Michelle Yeoh and Sonequa Martin-Green (The Walking Dead) on CBS All Access and Netflix.

The Dark Tower

One of the most anticipated movies of this year, the Stephen King series of novels will take its stories to the big screen, starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey.

Valerian and the City of Thousand Planets

If you’ve watched the trailer for this film already, you might see plenty of similar elements of past sci-fi films. Well, that’s because all those films took their ideas from the European based comic book series with the same name as the film. 20 years later, after the release of The Fifth Element, Luc Besson returns to the project that served as the inspiration to all the other sci-fi films we’ve come to love.

Blade Runner 2049

Denis Villeneuve, possibly the hottest director in Hollywood right now, brings back Harrison Ford into the sequel, alongside Ryan Gosling. The sci-fi classic sequel recently released a trailer for the new film. Even though it wasn’t as grand as the other trailers we’ve seen late last year, it gave us a damn good idea what we’re in for. And we like it.

Ghost in the Shell

Yes, we all know the casting controversy around this one, but the creator of the legendary manga, Masamune Shirow, will get to watch a new live-action film based on his work. So let’s move on, and see if this film can actually deliver. The film stars Scarlett Johansson in the lead, co-starring Takeshi Kitano.

John Wick: Chapter 2

Okay, here’s an interesting one. The original John Wick film took everyone by surprise and we haven’t run into anyone who didn’t love that movie. The film was so successful the sequel will surely make a huge dent at the box office. To take things further, they are planning to have an entire comic book series based on the film. Any complaints? Of course not.

Marvel on Netflix

After the immense success of both seasons of Daredevil, followed by Jessica Jones and Luke Cage, we’ll be watching Iron Fist. The latter will be followed by The Defenders later in the year, joining all four superheroes to take on a larger challenge. Comic book nerds, or “sweaties” as Jon Schnepp would put it, would have never thought we’d be seeing these wonderful low-key heroes do so well on television.

Superheroes galore

Okay, we’ll just sum it up the best way possible for comic book superheroes returning to the big screen in 2017. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, Justice League, Wonder Woman. Logan, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok. Yup, that pretty much sums it up. Enjoy.

To the future and beyond

Now we can go on and on about the new shows and movies that will grace the screens for us geeks, but that would take most of your time. There’s plenty of “geekness” to be had in the near future, so don’t forget to also keep an eye on our Showtime pages for a list extending to the anticipated watch list.
