Govt to meet Facebook over 'objectionable content'
The government will meet with Facebook authorities this month to discuss how to track down criminal elements via the social network, the state minister for post and telecommunications said on Tuesday. "We are going to firmly tackle the issue of extremist ideologies being spread on the internet," Tarana Halim said. State Minister Tarana first met with Facebook representatives in early 2016 to discuss the government's plan to moderate the social network's content in the country. On Tuesday she said that Facebook authorities have already helped the government to shut down several Facebook pages by responding within 48 hours of a complaint being filed.

"Facebook has employees who understand what type of Bangla content is being uploaded. Bangladesh is a secular country, and we have sensitive social values. Social networking sites like Facebook should develop their policies keeping that in mind," she said. Until we identify the people who are spreading such objectionable content, we will not be able to stop them," the minister said. The  two-day workshop titled "Digital Bangladesh: Focusing on cybercrime, safe internet and broadband" will conclude at Le Meridian hotel in Dhaka on Wednesday.
