'Facebook will not be blocked for even an hour'

Update : 05 Apr 2017, 11:15 AM
State minister for Posts and Telecommunication Division Tarana Halim said Facebook will not be blocked for a single hour, as the government has not made a decision to block the social networking site. The junior minister made this statement at a press conference held at the Secretariat on Tuesday in Dhaka. Earlier, the cabinet division of the government proposed to block Facebook for six hours every night from 12am onward so that students would not be diverted from their studies. The cabinet division sought the opinion of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission in this regard. Terming the proposal contradictory to the Digital Bangladesh plan, the telecom regulator said shutting down Facebook for a certain period of time is impossible. “We have already informed the cabinet division that it is not possible to shut down Facebook for a certain period of time. Rather, we can work together to create awareness about how to use Facebook’s privacy features,” Tarana said. “I want to say firmly that we have not taken a decision to block the social networking site. The telecommunication division has not even discussed the issue and no one will see any documents in this regard. We have called this press conference to remove all the confusion,” she added. The state minister also told reporters that currently 25 million people use Facebook in this country.
