BMET launches app for filing of complaints
An app for aspiring migrants was launched on Thursday, allowing them to lodge complaints with the Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET) through their phones. The app, Obhijog BMET, also allows the complainant to make inquiries about the current status of their complaint, said Refugee and Migratory Movements Research Unit (RMMRU) Chariman Tasneem Siddiqui. It is available for download on Google Playstore and can operate in both English and Bangla. State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam launched the app during a conference organized by RMMRU in Dhaka. Parvez Alam, IT officer at RMMRU, told the Dhaka Tribune that the RMMRU chairman promised to help BMET develop apps during a consultation meeting in August last year, and a five member team was subsequently formed in this regard. He added that the work on the app, funded by the PROKAS program of British Council, was completed in December 2017. In the month leading up to the launch, test runs were conducted. Parvez further said that the initiative to create the app was taken as not everyone had a computer to lodge complaints on the BMET website, www.obhijogbmet.org. At the launching event, State Minister Shahriar Alam said: “To hear from our valuable partners, the expatriate Bangladeshi workers, I have already opened a Facebook page where I have received much feedback. This initiative will be extremely beneficial for them. I am glad to have the opportunity to launch the app.” He added that work was already underway to regularize irregular migrants in countries such as Malaysia. Meanwhile, Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Nurul Islam said the ministry is working to make a safe, secure and disciplined migration system for expatriate Bangladeshi workers. In addition, RMMRU honoured 13 people and institutions in seven categories for their contribution to the development sector over the years at the launching ceremony. Ealier in the day, RMMRU Chairman Tasneem presented a proposal for initiating measures to achieve “Vision 2030.” She demanded that the decade from 2020-2029 be announced as the “Migration Decade” to promote and develop the sector. She also urged the legalization of middlemen so they could be listed as service providers by the government, as many villagers are prone to trusting middlemen they are familiar with over recruiting agents.
