P30 series launched for the Bangladeshi market

A week after its much publicized global launch in Paris, the Huawei P30 series was launched officially in Bangladesh on April 2, as well as in the Malaysian market.

With universally acclaimed predecessors like Mate 20 and P20 setting the bar high for the new flagship release, Huawei makes no secret of its ambition to climb up to the top of the pyramid of the handset market.

“We cut no corners in terms of hardware and software quality. And we are confident that our flagship phones are able to compete with the top players in the market,” Beyond Zheng, GTM director for Huawei Consumer Business Group Bangladesh told Dhaka Tribune during the launch ceremony in Kuala Lumpur.

At the launch in Kuala Lumpur, where members of Bangladeshi press attended at Huawei’s invitation, the deputy country director for Huawei Malaysia, Matthew Ng said Huawei’s premium brand in Malaysia grew 10 percent in just one year - from 22 percent in February 2018 to 32 percent in February 2019. It ended up capturing a staggering 46 percent of the premium smartphone market share in the Asia-Pacific country.

Now with the ambitious P30 series, the company seems to be pushing the envelope even further to continue its rapid ascent toward market leadership.

With Huawei’s signature sleek design, the P30 series boasts super sensing Leica quad camera, capable of night vision and 50x digital zoom, as well as a 10x lossless zoom, both unprecedented features in the smartphone market. The zoom features are equipped with powerful AI capabilities that sets the phone camera on a par with professional cameras on many aspects.

Huawei is, however, no stranger to equipping its higher end models with top notch cameras. Last year’s P20 Pro offered a triple-lens Leica-branded rear camera system.

P30 series now takes that further by employing a ‘quad camera’ system (with four cameras) that allows for extensive low-light performance, an ultra-wide-angle lens, a 5x optical-zoom, ‘periscope’ lens and a ‘Time of Flight’ depth-sensing camera.

The 50x digital zoom can get zoomed in shots of a bright moon without getting over-exposed and is able to distinctly capture the lunar seas or the dark spots on the moon, as demonstrated in the presentation at the launch in Kuala Lumpur. The lossless 10x zoom can capture detail features of objects as clearly from over 300 feet away as phone cameras would from a close distance of five or ten feet.

Soon after the release, the Pro version topped the list of DxOMark, a leading source of independent image quality measurements and ratings for smartphone.

P30 Pro topped the list for its rear camera and the selfie camera on the DxOMark ranking. It is followed by Huawei Mate 20 Pro and Huawei P20 Pro on the second and third position. Huawei phones secured a total of four places in the top ten ranking, with Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus taking up the fourth and Apple’s iPhone XS Max earning the sixth position.

Huawei’s marketing focus on the camera seems to have overshadowed the other lucrative features in the P30 series. The P30 Pro featuring Android 9.0 (Pie) EMUI 9.1, Huawei Kirin 980 octa-core processor and 8GB RAM, has all the bells and whistles of a modern smartphone with an impressive 4200 mAh battery in its slim body.

The P30 features the Android 9 (EMUI 9.1) OS and Huawei Kirin 980 processor. This iteration also has an 8GB RAM. The Lite is equipped with Android 9.0 (EMUI 9.0.1) and Kirin 710 chipset and 6GM RAM.

Influential tech publication TechRadar noted that P30 Pro has a “definite fluidity under the finger,” and “lightning-fast reactions.” TechRadar’s initial review concluded that “The Huawei P30 Pro is one of the strongest phones the brand has ever produced,” but the upgrades felt “a little more incremental this year.”

The smartphones are open for pre-booking in Bangladesh until April 10. With pre-booking of P30 Pro customers are offered Huawei’s smart watch GT for free. Bought individually, the smart watch costs Tk19,990.

For P30, customers will get a pair of FreeBuds, Huawei’s wireless headphones, worth Tk12,990. And for P30 Lite, customers will get a Band 3e, swimming and running tracker by Huawei, which is priced Tk1,890.

The retail price for Huawei P30 Pro has been set at Tk89,999, for the P30 Tk64,999 and for P30 Lite Tk29,999. Monthly installment plans or EMI are also offered for each of these phones.
