Stroke and epilepsy are on the rise
The government is worried by the alarming rise in the number of stroke and epilepsy patients. Worldwide, 20 percent of those with non-communicable diseases suffer from a neurological disorder of some kind. Most are from developing countries. The majority of these patients suffer from stroke or epilepsy and the number is increasing at an alarming rate. The concerned department of the government has taken strong measures to tackle this issue. Planning Ministry sources say even the National Institute of Neurosciences & Hospital (NINH), with its 300 in-patient capacity, is struggling with the rise in the number of patients. The government is spending an amount of Tk425 crore to tackle this problem. Right now in the country, the number of neurology related patients are 4-5 million. For every 100 thousand, 250 people are affected by one of these two disorders. Notably, strokes are a major neurological issue and a huge cause of deaths today, but treated in time, a person can recover fully. The National Institute of Neurosciences & Hospital (NINH) was established in 2012, especially to provide treatment to stroke and epileptic patients. But both in-door and out-door patients are increasing rapidly. A survey shows that in 2013 the number of neurological patients was 21,744 and 14,495 neurosurgery patients were in the out-patient department. In 2016, the number of neurological patients rose to 136,310 and neurosurgery patients increased to 57,581 in the out-patient department. In the in-door department, in 2013 the number of patients at the neurology department were 1,146, and in neurosurgery it was 1,435. In 2016 the numbers were 8,550 and 2,001. Planning commission sources have said the government has undertaken initiatives to increase the NINH’s capacity to 800 from 300, while the cost is estimated at around Tk420.38 crores. The project is expected to be completed by December 31, 2020. The new facility will be next to NINH’s current one in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. A 15 storied building including three will be constructed. It has been noticed that disorders like, paralysis, memory loss, Parkinson’s and other old age diseases are on the rise.

What the research shows

A variety of research has shown that the number of epilepsy patients is around 1.5 million. Other than that headaches, neuropathy, brain disorder, brain tumour, brain injury, spinal cord injury, psychiatric patients, chromosomal disorders, and genetic disorders are some of the other conditions worth mentioning. For every 1,000, 70-80 people are affected by the above issues, not to mention road injuries. DG of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said: “This project’s main aim is to increase services so patients do not have to suffer the way they do now.” “Through this project, seats for higher degrees like MD, MS, FCPS will also increase and those specialists can be sent to different parts of the country to provide health care.   This article was first published on banglatribune.com
