To increase utilization of family planning services through universal health coverage, USAID has launched the “Shukhi Jibon” project in Bangladesh.

USAID announced the closing of the “Mayer Hashi-II” project and launched the new project  “Shukhi Jibon” at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) on Thursday.

Pathfinder International, in partnership with IntraHealth International, will implement the project for five years from July 2018 to July 2023.

Caroline Crosbie, project director of Shukhi Jibon, and senior country director of Pathfinder International, introduced the project at the program.

With strategic support from the Obstetrics Gynecology Society of Bangladesh (OGSB) and the University of Dhaka, the project has been implemented in four divisions- Chittagong, Dhaka, Mymensingh, and Sylhet.

At first the project will begin implementing in seven pilot districts and expand to cover all districts within the four divisions.

GM Saleh Uddin, secretary of ME and FW Division, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW) said: “Family planning is our main priority; we can achieve all targets with the collaboration of government and NGOs.

“Obviously this project will create a new dimension in the family planning sector and it should include all districts of every division under the project as soon as possible.”

Susanta Kumar Saha, director general of National Institute of Population Research and Training (NIPORT), said: “Information Technology (IT) should be included to monitor the project.”

This project will be led in partnership with MOHFW, NIPORT, the Directorate General of Family Planning (DGFP), and the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Dr Kazi Mustafa Sarwar, director general of DGFP, Quazi AKM Mohiul Islam, and additional secretary of MOHFW also spoke at the program, among others.
