Locals hurled brickbats at the house in a bid to force them away from the area
18 members of a family have tested positive for Covid-19 in Fatulla area of Narayanganj.
Locals have been creating ruckus over the matter. They hurled brickbats toward their house and barred an ambulance from entering the area.
The incident took place on Tuesday in Delpara area in ward number 4 of Kutubpur union under sadar upazila (Fatullah).
The family complained that some people from the area came to their house in the evening and told them to leave the house. Later, they started creating turmoil in the area while throwing stones at the house.
Nahida Barik, sadar upazila nirbahi officer went to the location following the incident and urged the locals to be more compassionate.
She said: “You are trying to drive the family away from the area because 18 of them have been infected by coronavirus. You even did not let the ambulance enter in the morning."
“However, the civil surgeon [whose maternal family is infected] is continuously treating Covid-19 patients at the 300 bedded hospital. If anyone from your family was infected, she would have treated them too,” she added.
The UNO said: “I have spoken to the civil surgeon and I am taking responsibility for the family. And I am reminding you time and again not to come out of your houses. Please stay inside for the safety of your family.”
Fatullah Model police station OC Md Aslam Hossain said: “The incident was sparked by widespread fear amid the coronavirus crisis situation. Lawful measures will be taken if such an incident is repeated.”
