Covid-19: Bangladesh records most single-day deaths since September 21

Number of infections spiking as winter approaches, bringing threat of second wave

Bangladesh on Tuesday recorded 39 deaths from Covid-19, the highest number of deaths from the novel coronavirus on a single day in the country since September 21.

The latest deaths take the overall death toll from the pandemic in the country to 6,254. Bangladesh’s first Covid-19 death was recorded on March 18.

A total of 2,212 fresh cases of Covid-19 were confirmed on Tuesday, the highest since September 3, according to a press release of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The daily test positivity rate was 13.83%, the highest since September 8. A total of 15,990 samples were tested at 117 authorized laboratories across the country.

Tuesday was the second straight day that more than 2,000 cases of Covid-19 were confirmed in Bangladesh. Before Monday, the last time the number of fresh cases crossed 2,000 was September 4.

The total number of infections has now surged to 436,684.

Meanwhile, the recovery count rose to 352,895 after another 1,749 patients were discharged from hospitals in the 24 hours till Tuesday morning.

Among the total number of infections, 80.81% of patients have recovered, while 1.43% have died so far since the first Covid-19 positive cases were reported in the country on March 8.

Among the 39 deaths, 30 are male and nine are female. One person was in his 20s, one in his 30s, two are in their 40s, and 24 are over 60 years old.

According to division-wise data, 22 deaths took place in Dhaka division and the rest in other divisions—all at hospitals.

Of the 6,254 deaths, 3,283 deaths have taken place in Dhaka division, 1,223 in Chittagong, 382 in Rajshahi, 482 in Khulna, 209 in Barisal, 259 in Sylhet, 286 in Rangpur and 130 in Mymensingh division, according to the press release.

A total of 2,572,952 samples have been tested since the detection of the first Covid-19 cases in the country.

Mobile court drives

No fewer than 156 people have been fined in Chittagong, Chandpur, and Brahmanbaria for nor wearing masks.

As many as 106 were penalized Tk14,650 in Chandpur, while 13 others were fined Tk2,300.

Meanwhile, 18 pedestrians paid Tk 3,500 in fines for violating health protocols by not wearing masks while on the road.

The drives are being conducted across the country to raise awareness about the mandatory health rules amid risk of a potential second wave of Covid-19 in winter.
