The country has vaccinated a total of 2,673,038 people till now

Despite being a developing country, Bangladesh has managed to secure the 17th position in the list of countries with the most number of people vaccinated for Covid-19.

The country achieved the feat in under a month as the nationwide inoculation program was launched on February 7 while countries like the UK, the first country to launch the Covid-19 vaccination program in the world, began in early December.

The comparison was made through using data provided by Our World in Data and the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

According to the DGHS, Bangladesh had administered 2.67 million vaccine doses till Wednesday while some 216,167,273 doses of vaccines have been administered globally.

According to global media, 95 countries in the world are administering the vaccine currently, with at least 15 countries having begun administering a second dose of the vaccine.

Data show that Bangladesh is ahead of countries like Australia, Singapore, Japan, South Korea and Canada in terms of the number of people vaccinated.

Statistics from Our World in Data also showed that the US was leading the way, having administered 65 million doses of the vaccine till 7pm on Wednesday.

China holds the second position with inoculating over 40 million vaccines to its people, followed by the UK administering 18 million vaccines nationwide.

Among the top five countries, India, the only country from South Asia, and Israel have the highest percentage (88%) of vaccines in terms of population and total vaccines administered.

Bangladesh could outstrip Morocco within a couple of days as it has been administering vaccines to 225,000 people on average in the last seven days. The figure for Morocco is 100,000 a day, according to a Moroccan daily.

South Asian scene

While the country holds the 17th position in the world, it is in second place in the South Asia subcontinent.

India is the only country above Bangladesh in the list although six South Asian countries are currently running their inoculation programs.

Only India has administered more vaccines, 11,907,392 in total, than Bangladesh. The country is also the only one in this subcontinent which has started administering a second dose of Covid 19 vaccines to its citizens.

Eminent virologist and member of National Technical Advisory committee (NTAC), Prof Dr Nazrul Islam, said: “It appears that Bangladesh has managed the vaccination program well till now.”

Experience from the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) was helping the government implement its plan more effectively. However, the level of success would be truly determined once the authority started administering the second dose of the vaccine, he added.

Over 2.5million people vaccinated in Bangladesh

Bangladesh on Wednesday witnessed a decrease as 181,985 people received vaccine shots.

Some 39 people have faced mild adverse after-effects, taking the total number of such incidents to 669 till now.

The country has vaccinated a total of 2,673,038 people till now. Of them, 1,746,132 were men and 936,906 are women.

The health authorities are vaccinating people in 1,005 centres across the country.

Less online registration during weekend

The ICT division confirmed that around 3.95 million people had completed their registration till 8:30pm on Wednesday.

According to the government body, fewer people register on the weekend or holidays while the number increases on work days. The best period to complete registration is from 5pm to 12 midnight.

On February 6, the DGHS said some 3.8 million people had completed registration even before the nationwide vaccination program started.

On February 5, 6, and 7, around 65,000 people completed their registration on average.

On February 9, registration crossed 100,000 mark for the first time and around 200,000 registrations have been completed each day since then, except on the holidays.

ICT Division sources said on the last three Fridays, some 65,790, 116,144 and 85,000 people completed their registration. Again, the number was only 91,392 on February 21, which was a national holiday.

The highest number of registrations was 305,205 on Tuesday, until this record was broken again on Wednesday, with over 327,500 registrations till 8:30pm.
