Covid-19: Bangladesh records highest daily infections in 7 months

The daily infection rate climbed up to 11.19%

Bangladesh has registered 2,809 new Covid-19 cases in the 24 hours to Monday morning – highest in seven months.

The last time more cases were recorded in a single day was on August 20 when 2,868 people tested positive.

With the latest development, the daily infection rate also climbed up to 11.19%. The last time daily infection rate crossed the 11%-mark was on December 11. 

The country also registered 30 more deaths in the 24-hour period. The death toll in the country rose to 8,720 and the total number of cases stands at 573,687.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) revealed the latest figures on Covid-19 in the country with a press release on Monday.

Of the 30 deceased – 25 men and five women – 24 were from Dhaka division, four from Chittagong, and one each from Khulna and Sylhet divisions.

Of the victims, 29 died at different hospitals and one at home.

So far, 6,595 men (75.63%) and 2,125 women (24.37%) have died from Covid-19 across the country. 

Since the beginning, 4,915 people have died in Dhaka division, 1,600 in Chittagong, 488 in Rajshahi, 570 in Khulna, 265 in Barisal, 315 in Sylhet, 368 in Rangpur, and 199 in Mymensingh.

The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.52%.

The health authorities said 1,754 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.

So far, 524,159 patients – 91.37% – have made full recovery across the country.

As many as 25,111 samples, including the pending ones, were tested in the 219 authorized labs -- government and private -- across the country.

The overall infection rate of the country stands at 12.94%.

Currently, 10,116 people are in isolation and 33,277 are quarantined.

Meanwhile, more than 6.2 million people registered around the country to get the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine till Monday afternoon, said the health directorate.

Until Sunday, over 4.8 million people have been vaccinated nationwide since January 27.

On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December, 2019 and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

The fast-spreading coronavirus has claimed more than 2,729,111 lives and infected as many as 123,942,893 people across the world till Monday afternoon, according to worldometer.

As many as 99,864,223 people have recovered from Covid-19, which has affected 219 countries and territories across the planet.
